Joint M.A. Degree With the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute
I. Admissions
Students must be formally admitted by both the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and the IFS. Prior experience in journalism is not required, but French language fluency (reading and oral comprehension) is a prerequisite.
II. Program of study
The program is composed of four elements:
1. Courses in Journalism totaling 20 points and including:
• Writing, Research and Reporting Workshop I (G54.1021)
• Four elective courses chosen in consultation with the student’s journalism advisor and/or the Director of Graduate Studies in Journalism
2. Courses in French Studies totaling 24 points and including
• 19th Century French History (G46.1610)
• A course in 20th Century French History
• Four elective courses chosen in consultation with the IFS advisor
3. The Comprehensive Examination in French Studies
4. An M.A. project in the form of a professional piece of journalistic work focusing on a French subject. It may be a magazine piece, a radio or television documentary, or a series of newspaper articles. The M.A. project will be supervised by one member of each department.
