Welcome to the Institute of French Studies. The IFS is one of this country’s leading graduate centers for the study of modern France and the Francophone world. We’re located in the heart of Greenwich Village, where we bring together historians, sociologists, political scientists, and other scholars to study France and its relationship with the wider world. Our intellectual community explores a wide variety of issues, both in their historical contexts and as key phenomena of contemporary life. The complexities of an interconnected, global environment create a pressing need for people who can navigate a dizzying array of cross-cultural forces and speak and write cogently about them. Our M.A. recipients are trained to do exactly that, and they have gone on to successful careers in government, diplomacy, education, international business, media, and the arts. Ph.D. graduates of the IFS have taken up faculty positions at top colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. To read more...
